Index AMI 4G LTE Connectivity: NanoSIM slot for your own last-mile solution, or embedded multi-operator Noatec eSIM with private APN

June 17, 2026·8 min read

The Index AMI connects meters to your AMI Platform over 4G LTE. Two SIM options: a NanoSIM slot for your cellular operator, or the Noatec multi-operator eSIM (on request) with private APN and 4G coverage in up to 51 countries across the Americas. WireGuard VPN configurable with either option.

Two connectivity options: freedom to choose

The Index AMI does not lock you into a single 4G connectivity solution. With the NanoSIM slot, you can use the cellular operator of your last-mile solution — ideal if you already have a corporate contract, want direct control, or work in a region with a defined operator.

Noatec offers the alternative of incorporating an embedded eSIM (on request) for projects that need coverage across multiple zones or countries: with no operational burden for operator changes, the solution automatically selects the highest-quality network available among Noatec's network operators*.

If you choose to acquire the solution with eSIM, it comes embedded in the device — simply configure the Noatec private APN and it activates on its own at power-up, with no need to manage local contracts. Without losing the option to switch to NanoSIM mode with your own operator: the Index AMI device supports both and prioritizes the NanoSIM.

* Subject to changes in conditions with available network operators and deployment and coverage in the territory.

The Index AMI opens a 4G LTE channel from the meter to the AMI Platform — over the customer's NanoSIM or the Noatec multi-operator eSIM. Both options deliver readings in real time from the first power-up.

Noatec eSIM: automatic operator switching within our 4G LTE solution

The Noatec eSIM operates in 51 countries across the Americas with automatic carrier switching — the system selects the best available network in each area without installer intervention. This simplifies projects that with a conventional SIM would require additional management:

  • Rural or low-coverage areas: the eSIM evaluates available carriers until it finds signal, with no technician intervention.
  • Multi-region projects: a single connectivity configuration covers the entire gateway fleet, regardless of the dominant carrier in each zone.
  • Proven coverage in the main AMI markets of the Americas: United States, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Panama — among the countries with the highest number of 4G LTE operators negotiated in the network, translating into greater switching resilience.
  • Network outage resilience: if a carrier loses coverage in an area, the eSIM automatically switches to the next available network.

4G LTE CAT-1 Bis module

The Index AMI cellular module operates on 4G LTE CAT-1 Bis with multi-band LTE-FDD support. With Noatec eSIM active, the device automatically selects the best available LTE carrier in the area:

  • 4G LTE CAT-1 Bis: Up to 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink over LTE. Latency suitable for real-time telemetry, OTA (Over The Air — firmware updates delivered remotely without physical device access) updates and remote meter management.
  • Multi-band LTE-FDD: Bands B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B28 and B66 (FDD: Frequency Division Duplex — LTE mode using separate frequencies for uplink and downlink) — compatible with the main LTE operators in Latin America, North America and Europe. No hardware change between countries.
  • Automatic carrier selection (eSIM): With Noatec eSIM: the module evaluates available LTE signals in real time and registers with the best-coverage carrier. If a carrier degrades, the system switches automatically without data loss.
  • 51 countries across the Americas: The Noatec eSIM service covers 51 countries across the Americas — North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. One connectivity profile covers AMI projects across multiple geographies, with no additional local contracts.

eUICC: operator profile updatable remotely

The Noatec eSIM is industrial-grade with eUICC (Embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card — a SIM chip embedded in the hardware with the ability to switch operator profiles remotely, without replacing the physical card) capability. For AMI fleets of hundreds or thousands of gateways, this simplifies operations:

  • Carrier change without a field visit: if a carrier degrades in an area, the profile is updated centrally.
  • Extended lifecycle: the eSIM profile accompanies the full service life of the device in the field — designed to operate for years without intervention.
  • No vendor lock-in: the NanoSIM slot is always available — the buyer decides their last mile and can change it at any time.

WireGuard VPN: available with both SIM options

WireGuard (open-source VPN protocol, faster and lighter than IPSec or OpenVPN, used in over 150 million devices) is a capability of the Index AMI — not of the SIM. The device can bring up a WireGuard tunnel encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305 regardless of whether it uses NanoSIM or Noatec eSIM. The difference lies in who manages the infrastructure:

  • With NanoSIM: The customer or operator configures the WireGuard tunnel on the Index AMI pointing to their own VPN server. Traffic exits through the operator APN and enters the encrypted tunnel toward the AMI Platform. The customer manages the VPN infrastructure.
  • With Noatec eSIM: Traffic exits through the Noatec private APN — no exposure to the public internet. The customer can additionally configure a WireGuard tunnel if the project requires it. The private APN already provides a level of network isolation without additional VPN.

Summary

  1. The Index AMI offers two equally valid SIM options: NanoSIM slot for the customer's operator, or Noatec multi-operator eSIM (on request) with coverage in 51 countries across the Americas.
  2. Both options activate the 4G LTE channel automatically on power-up — real-time readings to the AMI Platform from the first power-up, with no additional field infrastructure.
  3. WireGuard VPN is a device capability, not a SIM feature: it can be implemented with any operator. With Noatec eSIM, the private APN provides additional network isolation.
  4. The eUICC profile enables remote, centralized carrier updates — useful for large fleets or multi-country projects.
  5. The NanoSIM slot is always available: the buyer decides their last mile and can change it at any time.
